Does Marble Stain? Acid Etching and Impregnators

The two things most often confused about marble: staining and etching. They are different problems with different remedies. What each liquid does, what an impregnator is for, and what to avoid.

There is no single answer to "does marble stain?", because the question confuses two different events. Most marks seen on marble are not stains but etching; the two have different causes and different remedies.

Etching: the surface loses its gloss

Marble is calcium carbonate based and reacts with acid. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola or a cleaning product containing acid will locally remove the gloss from a polished surface. The resulting mark is not dirt that has penetrated the stone; the micro-texture of the surface has changed. Seen against the light it appears as a matt patch.

The remedy: re-polishing that area, which can be done with the countertop in place. On honed (matt) surfaces, etching occurs on a surface that is already matt and is therefore very hard to pick out by eye — this is the real reason we recommend honed finishes for busy kitchens.

Staining: liquid penetrates the stone

A true stain is liquid entering and remaining in the pores of the stone. Olive oil, red wine, coffee and beetroot juice are typical examples. Oil-based stains leave a dark shadow in the stone; water-based ones leave colour.

The chance of removal is highest while the stain is fresh. Rather than wiping, act as an absorbent: press paper towel down to draw the liquid up, do not spread it by wiping. For what remains, a stain remover suited to the type of stone is used.

What an impregnator does and does not do

An impregnator enters the pores of the stone and forms a layer beneath the surface that repels liquid. What it does: lengthens the time liquid needs to penetrate, buying you time to wipe a spill. What it does not do: prevent acid etching. An impregnator is not a film and does not coat the surface; acid still reacts with the carbonate.

Checking it once a year is enough. A simple test: leave a few drops of water on the surface and if the stone has darkened after fifteen minutes, the impregnator needs refreshing.

What to avoid in daily care

  • Do not use acidic cleaners. Limescale removers and vinegar- or lemon-based products are not for marble.
  • Do not use abrasive pads or scouring powder. They leave a web of fine scratches on a polished surface.
  • Do not set hot pans down directly. Marble withstands heat, but a sudden temperature difference builds stress; use a trivet.
  • Use a chopping board. On travertine in particular the surface is softer than marble.

For daily cleaning, warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner are enough. And here lies natural stone's greatest advantage: its surface can be renewed. Having a countertop re-polished years later returns the surface to its first-day condition at a fraction of the cost of a new one.
