Beige Marble Bathroom with a Green Veined Wall

There are two stones in this bathroom and they do not compete. The back wall was clad in a stone where brown and copper veins cross a green ground; since the wall already carries a strong pattern, a calm, warm beige was chosen for the vanity top. Had the top been a stone of the same character, the room would have been split between two movements.

The basin is not a separate piece: the bowl was produced from the top's own stone. Side faces cut from the slab were mitred at 45 degrees and the joints filled with a coloured epoxy carrying the stone's own dust. The base of the bowl was prepared with a slight fall towards the waste; without it, water stands on the surface of a wide, shallow bowl and leaves limescale marks over time.

The top sits in one piece on a wall-hung unit. In wall-hung installation the weight of the stone must transfer to the load-bearing profile in the wall rather than the cabinet carcass; where that calculation is skipped, the carcass sags over time.

The surface was finished honed. A matt surface has a practical benefit in a bathroom: the mark left by a drying droplet is not as prominent as on a glossy one. The brass-framed mirror and brass tapware work with the warmth of the beige ground.
