Travertine Coffee Table

From outside this table looks like a single block of travertine, yet it is hollow. The secret of the effect is the mitred joint: the slabs are cut at 45 degrees at the corner and bonded together, with the joint filled by an epoxy carrying the stone's own dust. A table carved from solid block would be too heavy to move and most of the material would end up as waste; the mitred method gives the same appearance at a manageable weight.

The critical detail is vein continuity. When the two faces meeting at a corner are prepared from consecutive pieces of the same slab, travertine's bedding lines are not severed as they turn the corner but continue onto the adjoining face. Without working this detail, the table reads from outside as "cladding".

The travertine was left matt here: the porous texture and horizontal bedding lines are the character of the surface itself. Since this is a surface in contact with glasses and plates in a living room, we recommend the filled preparation and an impregnator; pores left unfilled collect dirt over time.
