One stone, two finishes

The difference between honed and polished cannot be understood from a colour chart. Drag the handle to compare them on the same stone.

Surface comparison
Honed grey marble kitchen countertop — a stainless sink with drainer fitted into the matt, almost patternless surface
Polished grey marble kitchen countertop — a black nano-coated sink set into the white-veined surface
Polished Honed
Polished
The surface is progressively brought to a shine with abrasive discs. The stone's colour deepens, the vein reads most clearly on this finish, and light reflects. Water marks and acid etching are more easily noticed than on a matt surface.
Honed
Polishing is stopped before the gloss stage. A smooth but matt surface remains. The colour is a shade lighter than polished and the vein appears calmer. We recommend it for heavily used kitchens: it hides local etching and fingerprints.

In detail

About this work

Grey is the tone for projects that want to stay neutral; it works alongside concrete, matt lacquer and smoked glass. Because it carries surface marking better than white, it stands out in heavily used kitchens.

Two different characters sit side by side in this product. The first image shows a polished grey with pronounced veining: white lines over a ground that leans towards green, a surface that reflects light, and the vein reading at its clearest. A black nano-coated sink was set into the top, its drainer channels recessed into the stone surface.

The second image shows a honed, almost patternless grey. Because polishing is stopped before the gloss stage, the surface is smooth but matt and the colour reads a shade lighter. A stainless sink with a drainer was fitted to this top.

The two images show the two ends of the same decision: a polished surface brings the character of the stone forward, a honed surface hides the traces of daily use. You can examine both side by side in the surface comparison on this page.
